Learn what AI actually does

Your phone can write a job application. It can explain a school textbook in Hindi. It can work out a GST figure, or tell a farmer today's crop price. All of that runs on AI.

Most of these tools are free. What most people have never had is somebody to sit down and show them how. That is what this lab is for.

The gap that is left

Every technology before this one arrived in order of wealth. Electricity, the telephone, the computer. Whoever could pay got it first, and everyone else waited a generation.

This one did not wait and it did not ask. The shopkeeper in Sriniwaspuri and the company director in Gurugram are holding the same tool tonight, and it cost them the same, which is nothing.

So the old gap has closed. A new one has opened in its place, and it is not a gap of money. It is a gap of knowing. Knowing what the thing does. Knowing what to ask it. Knowing when not to believe it.

That gap is smaller than the old one, and it is easier to close. Knowledge is the one thing people can hand to each other without losing it.

You may never use AI. AI will still use you.

A model may rank your job application before any person reads it. A model may score your loan file. A model may flag your child's homework as copied. A model already decides what you see on your phone every hour of the day.

None of that is something you can opt out of. You can only choose whether you understand it.

How we teach

Hands first, theory last, and only as much theory as the hands need. In our classes a learner types a prompt in the first hour, before anyone has told them what a prompt is. The explanation lands better afterwards, because by then they have typed one and seen what came back.

We mix ages at the same table on purpose. The youngest in a batch may be ten and the oldest past fifty. The child is faster at the keyboard. The older learner asks better questions, because he has spent a working life finding out what a wrong number costs. Each takes something from the other.

This is community based AI learning. One room, fifteen chairs, and neighbours sitting down to learn next to each other.

We are small, and we know it

We have built one lab. It seats fifteen learners at a time. India has more than 1.4 billion people. Set against the size of the problem, this amounts to very little. We do it anyway, for two reasons.

The first is that we were taught. Everything we know about this work, somebody showed us first. None of them had to. We cannot pay those people back now, so we are passing it on instead.

The second is what it does for the person who learns. She writes her own job application instead of paying a shop to write it. He checks the number himself instead of trusting whoever quoted it. It is a small change in one life, and it stays with them after we have gone.
